What Should I Bring on a Rubicon Trip?

“Mr. Rubicon” guiding Jeeps through obstacles.

Given space is limited inside a Jeep, we recommend you pack light, fitting all of your personal gear in one sturdy duffel bag if possible. Be prepared for warm days and cool nights. Rain is unlikely, but not impossible! We will be in and out of the vehicles, so athletic or technical clothing that you’re comfortable getting dirty is a must.

Here’s an idea of what to pack:

  • Shorts and long pants (warm days, cool nights)

  • T-shirts (or other comfortable, breathable shirts you don’t mind getting dirty)

  • Sweatshirt or fleece

  • Windbreaker or packable rain jacket

  • Sturdy shoes: Hiking boots, Teva-style sport sandals

  • Hat and sunglasses

  • Sunscreen and bug spray

  • Swimsuit (in case we stop for a quick dip along the trail)

  • Tums, Advil, Imodium–basic things to help keep you comfortable

  • Any medication that you take regularly

  • Swimsuit, towel, flashlight, lighter/matches

  • Wag bag, including ziploc bags, toilet paper and anything else needed for bathroom breaks

  • Sense of humor and a smile!

Camping equipment, including sunscreen, bugspray, clean and quality tents, sleeping pads and sleeping bags can be provided upon request. After booking your spot, you’ll receive more information on other basic safety equipment to pack if you’re bringing your personal vehicle.

What will we eat?

Meals are provided on our guided Rubicon Trail trips: That’s breakfast, lunch and dinner for all days on the trail. Dietary restrictions will be collected once your spot is reserved.

In addition to meals on trail, please pack your own favorite snacks and any beverages (including water) you want for after each day on the trail. The Rubicon Trail is a county road and drinking while driving comes with severe penalties. Moderate and responsible consumption of alcohol at camp is acceptable.

Barlows has you covered

Our guide Jeeps carry tools, first aid, emergency communication and recovery equipment for unexpected breakdowns and sticky situations along the trail. If you rent a Barlow Jeep, it will be outfitted with a fire extinguisher and other emergency equipment.

Aside from all of the gear and equipment, our experienced and knowledgeable guides will provide spotting, recovery, 4×4 instruction, and information about the trail and the spectacular country it traverses.
